Sketched Earth
I am slowly moving from IG to here on Substack. I'm going to attempt to post my warmups, coffee draws and then some of my folio work, here.
I make this easy look like shit
Bo Burnham once said “I make this easy look like shit” which I thought was pretty clever, hence the title. Art is hard, ask any practicing artist and they’ll say the same thing, “Art is hard.”
I want to post the good, the bad and the ugly. This way I get to show you all the crap I mess up on as well as when I have successes.
Sketched Earth
I use Earthsworld for a lot of my sketch references. “Earth” (that’s their name) goes to fairs, festivals and gatherings and takes picture of the quirkiest people. It’s all posted at their site and it is a never ending sea of portraits to draw.
Here’s my warm-up sketch* for the day. I’ve been taking my original sketch and iterating over it while cleaning up as I go. This is vastly different than my “add another layer, iterate, add another layer, iterate”. So far, I’ve really enjoyed the results.

Warm-up sketch*
It drives me batty when artists are like “haaaay franz, on my lunchbreak and just drew this in 15 minutes” and then it’s the most beautifully rendered shit you’ve ever seen in your life that leaves you wondering how they did that so fast.
